The biggest challenge for most authors in Kindle publishing is hitting the Publish button. You’d think it would be easy. However, keeping deadlines we set for ourselves is FAR from easy. We tend to believe our own excuses. Here’s the answer: set yourself a challenge.
Way back in 2010, we set our first writing challenge, over 30 days. The results were amazing. Writers kickstarted their careers, or boosted them. I was thrilled, because the challenge worked for so many writers.
Challenging Yourself Works
Many years ago, a challenge started my own writing career. I wanted to write books. In those days, I thought all writers were novelists, so I gave myself TEN years to either get a novel published, or give up writing forever.
I was serious. I made a real commitment, and it scared me enough so that I decided that for 12 months, once each month, I’d send out a book proposal: three chapters and a synopsis. No one gave new writers a contract on the basis of three chapters, but it was a way of committing myself to serious effort.
So, I started. Within six months, I had a multi-book contract from a British publisher.
In My Very Scary 10,000 Book Sales Challenge Holly Hook’s created a real challenge to sell 10,000 books:
I will go tornado chasing.
I will pay for a professional storm chasing tour, take a trip to Kansas/Oklahoma/Nebraska etc and potentially meet a real, live tornado. Then I will film my experience and share it with all of you.
Will Holly’s challenge work? I have no idea. However, from my own experience with challenges, I know that something will happen, and it will be better than you could imagine.
After all, I got a multi-book contract. That’s unheard of for a writer who’s never published a novel. All I had were a bunch of chapters and synopses. When you challenge yourself, something will happen.
Your Challenge Is Just for You
Holly’s very brave, sharing her challenge with the world. You don’t have to share with anyone, if you don’t want to. I can’t remember, all these years later, whether I shared my own challenge. I probably did tell family, friends and colleagues.
So… will you challenge yourself? How? Share on social media please. Your challenge will change you.
