Does our “write a book this week” theme sound like a real challenge? An impossible challenge if you’re thinking in terms of a 200-page book perhaps, but what about a ten-page book? And what if you based your ebook on your blog’s content?
I’m always assuring my students that nothing they write is ever wasted. It’s all inventory. Indeed, everything you write can be the springboard to other writing. Your blog’s content is a goldmine, and the longer you’ve been blogging, the more valuable your content becomes.
Take a blog post or two, and expand it into an ebook
Let’s say you’ve written a “tips” blog post: “10 Tips to Declutter Your Home”. Could you expand on that to create a SHORT ebook?
We’ll start by checking that books on decluttering sell. Do an Amazon search for the topic. You’ll see that there are 293 results.
If no one else is selling your topic… abandon it.
So, the topic is selling, and if others are selling ebooks on the topic, you can too.
Tip: focus on getting your new ebook online this week. Ebooks sell forever, so even if your new ebook sells just five copies a month, over time those five sales will mount up – especially if you create MORE ebooks. The more ebooks you have at Amazon, the more each ebook will sell the others.
I know that some bloggers take their blog content and compile it to create an ebook. That’s one way of doing it. Alternatively, you can expand on that content.
Your original article is“10 Tips to Declutter Your Home”.
You could expand the content by either:
- Expanding the number of tips – to 20 or 30 (or whatever number you choose); or,
- Expanding each tip – add more advice, more examples, and more stories.
How short can your ebook be?
I’ve seen ebooks of six pages which sell well on Amazon. That’s 1,500 words. I’d make it 2,500 words, but it doesn’t matter much, as long as your readers get real value.
Create a cover for your ebook
Amazon will create your cover for you. Amazon Cover Creator is simple to use, and there’s a gallery of images you can choose from, if you don’t have an image you want to use.
Write, edit, create your cover and upload – and you’re done
Kindle Direct Publishing couldn’t be easier. Amazon’s Help files are excellent. Your first ebook will take longest. Once you’ve been through the process, each publication will be faster.
Remember to have fun.
