Become Determined: You Can Do It
I’ve been helping copywriters for years. Long before I start working with a writer, I can predict whether the writer is likely to succeed.
Here’s what the writers who become successful copywriters have, which the others don’t have: determination. They WANT to write copy, and get good at it.
The desire to do something is usually a good indicator that you CAN do something.
I fell into copywriting completely by accident. Once I saw the results — media attention, with TV camera crews, magazine articles, and radio interviews, I was hooked. Copywriters have power. They can make things happen for their clients. And since they make things happen, they’re well paid.
This past week, I’ve been chatting with writers who are going the wrong way. Heaven help us, they’re writing $2 articles, so I’ve decided to offer my popular “seven days” copywriting course as a special offering again.
Stop messing around with $2 articles
$2 gigs keep appearing, and writers keep getting sucked into writing 500 words for $2 and $3.
Pay attention now. If you’re not in a developing country — if you live in a western economy — YOU CAN’T AFFORD TO WRITE $2 ARTICLES.
Writers in developing economies CAN. They can, and they do. That’s fine. It’s NOT fine for you if you live in a developed economy, and want to pay your mortgage.
Don’t be sucked into $2 gigs because they’re not aimed at you. You have to go and get your own gigs… As I said in this article, you’ve got to hustle:
Getting GREAT writing jobs is simple. You’ve got to hustle.
One thing: don’t lower the fees you charge. Libby charges $150 an hour for her writing services. I think she can charge more than that. She’s an excellent writer. I suggested that once she’s got a few more clients, she lifts her rates.
As I said here, if you charge too little, you’ll cripple your business. Clients want the best writer they can afford. If you lower your rates, your business won’t be sustainable. You’ll burn out. Worse, clients won’t trust you, because you’re charging too little. If you’re making money for your clients, you need to make money too. You need time to think and plan. So please, charge appropriately.
If you’re going to hustle, you may as well get the most money you can out of your hustling. Ergo, copywriting, and ergo again… the “seven days” offering.
