Yesterday, we talked about using free blogging services to test your blog ideas.
You need SOMETHING to blog about, don’t you? 🙂 Well yes… your blog’s topic important. Some topics are impossible to monetize, others are hard to monetize. You need a topic that’s evergreen — won’t go out of fashion — and is easy to monetize. It should also be easy for YOU to write about with passion.
Regarding topics, in that post, I said:
Someone asked what topics you should create a blog around. That’s up to you. Years ago an editor told me that you can’t go wrong when you write about sex, money and weight loss. That’s always been the case, human nature being what it is…
See where the money is, first
Definitely you can blog about sex, money and weight loss — there’s money in those topics, which is why they’ll always be popular.
Just for giggles, go to Amazon’s Books Best Sellers page.
At the time of writing, we have:
* Shred: the Revolutionary Diet as the #2 top seller — weight loss sells. There are another couple of weight loss books in the top ten best sellers;
* At #14, we have — Fifty Shades of Grey — sex sells;
* At #15, we have StrengthsFinder 2.0 — a self-help business book. We can safely say that that’s about money.
So, in the top 15 bestsellers at Amazon, we’ve got the three topics we discussed covered. In my ultimate cash program, I go into a lot more detail about why some topics sell. We talk about Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, for example.
How will you make money?
Once you’ve tentatively chosen a money making topic, your prep work isn’t done. You need something to SELL on your blog, so that you make money.
What you sell is up to you. Many blogs do quite well posting advertising. However, the big boom in Google AdSense occurred way back in 2004. Lots of people got six figure checks regularly from Google. These days, Google’s advertising inventory is huge, and fewer people are willing to gamble on AdWords. This means that your income from Google will be low.
You can still make money from advertising on your blog, especially if you hand-sell blog spots. However, you need traffic to attract advertisers, and traffic takes time to develop. Therefore, you’ll need to be prepared to blog for a while before you can win some advertising income.
For writers, the easiest way to make money blogging is to sell affiliate products. You can do this very successfully, without too much drama. However, before you start blogging, find some products to promote. Know what you’re promoting, before you create your blog.
There are other ways to make money blogging. The big point I want to make is that before you create your test blog, make sure you know where the money will eventually come from. Once you know that, you’re ahead of 99.9% of bloggers who just create a blog, and then decide a month later, they’d better find a way of making money from it.
We said that you can create a blog business in 60 minutes. You can. So, what are you waiting for? 🙂
