Here’s a common question I get: “What will I write about?”
It’s easy to answer that question — write about what you care about. Start a blog. Your blog will inspire you.
Blogging is writing, AND it’s instant publishing. It should be self-evident that blogging is an essential activity for a writer.
Blogging helps you to achieve your writing goals, whatever those goals may be.
As I said in this article, Blog: Top Ten Blogging Tips for Writers | Angela Booth’s Fab Freelance Writing Blog: Make Money Writing:
“A blog can help you to achieve your writing goals. After you’ve been blogging for three months, assess where you want to go in your writing, and make a blogging plan.
For example, let’s say you want to be published in Magazine X. Announce this goal on your blog. Report on queries you’ve sent to the magazine. Yes, the editor will read your blog post, and then your query. Sneaky, eh? (Note: this only works if your blog is about your writing, so if your blog isn’t, start a new “my writing” blog.)”
I’ve been blogging since 2000, and you’d think after 12 long years I’d get sick of it. Not so. I’m more enthusiastic about blogging than I’ve ever been. (I told you about the hassles of my early years of blogging here.)
Here’s why I’m enthusiastic — blogging helps you to achieve your writing goals because it inspires you. Your blog gives you a topic, so you’ll always have something to write about.
I love this quote: “Inspiration actually emerges from the soil of action: perspiration is just the water that nourishes it.” It’s from this article, Three Strategies to Get and Stay Inspired. Read it.
I’ve worked with many writers, and here’s what I know: the writers who blog achieve their goals. Bloggers ACT. They’re writing. From that writing comes inspiration.
I often tell my students who have challenges that “you’re not writing enough”. Writing more is always the cure for whatever writing challenges you have. Your blog helps you to write more. You then get inspired… and then you achieve your writing goals.
I talked about ebook writers worrying about trivia like formatting yesterday. If you’re procrastinating, and worrying about silly stuff, it just means you’re not writing enough.
Write more — blog. You’ll become inspired. Writers write, remember? Blogging primes your writing pump. You’ll never need to ask “what will I write about?” You’ll know.
