In our first post in our new series, Top Opportunities for Writers in 2012, we discussed the importance of fresh content for websites in the wake of Google’s new update. This means that you can make money by offering “updating” services to your clients.
Our next opportunity for writers in 2012 is offering curation services.
You may be wondering just what content curation is:
Content Curation is the act of discovering, gathering, and presenting digital content that surrounds specific subject matter. Though it is still considered a “buzz word” by many in the content world, content curation is now becoming a marketing staple for many companies with a successful online presence.
Content curation has become popular because of the flood of content online: it organizes and presents content.
If you’re a blogger for businesses, you may already be curating content in your blog posts, when you offer links to news stories.
Content curation is beneficial to businesses
Content curation is useful for businesses because it can make them a “thought leader” in their industry.
For example, let’s say you’re doing content curation for a carpet manufacturer. How would this work? You might create an “industry news” section as part of the company’s monthly newsletter, or as a weekly blog post, or as an email message.
Businesses which are already online will be more receptive to your new content creation service than businesses which have a newly established online presence, or no have online presence at all. This is because businesses which already have presence are looking for additional content marketing opportunities.
By the way, businesses which have no online presence at all are prime prospects for you: create websites for them. You don’t need to create the site yourself: you create the content. Partner with a site developer who creates the actual site.
Go though your client list to find prospects
Do a little browsing online to research content curation first. Then, go through your client list. Which clients might be receptive to your new service? Contact all the prospects you find.
Focus on promoting the benefits of content curation to your prospects: thought leadership, and additional website traffic, leading to more sales.
If you’re writing for magazines, offer content curation services to them — they may be receptive because your service will help them to build their brand.
Content curation is easy
Basically, content curation is simply collecting links, and adding editorial comments to them. You can find content in vary ways: via Google Alerts, through direct searches, via social media sites like Twitter, and via forums.
Offer content creation, and well as content curation
While content curation is a great strategy for businesses, it doesn’t replace content creation. Fresh, unique and useful content rules.
Therefore, when offering content curation services, offer them as part of a package: offer to create fresh content, as well as curation.
Businesses to which you offer curation may have a stable of writers creating content. Chances are however, that you’ll be the first writer to offer curation services.
As the flood of content increases online, curation services are vital, and they offer a great opportunity for you in 2012.
