Writing and selling ebooks is the easiest way to make money from your writing, long after you’ve written it. In Words into Cash: Write and Sell Your Ebook in Just 8 Hours, I give you a super-simple way to write your ebooks, without floundering, so you just get it DONE.
Here’s the big secret of doing well with ebooks — promote as you write. It’s a simple concept, but very few writers understand it. Most of the messages I get from writers say something like: I’ve written an ebook, now what?
Thinking about your audience only after you’ve written the ebook is a disaster. This happens because the writer’s interested in something or other, and feels that because he’s interested, others will need whatever he’s created. Unfortunately, your own interests rarely tie in to buyers’ NEEDS. Sometimes they do, but this is pure luck, rather than good management.
I respond with: Ideally, you’d promote your ebook as you’re writing it… I say it in the hope that the writer will understand the importance of not just writing, but writing FOR AN AUDIENCE.
In this post, Write an Ebook: Promote It Before You Complete It | Angela Booth’s Fab Freelance Writing Blog, I made this clear: ”
* Target a market — people who want to lose weight, improve their relationships etc
* Assess whether that market buys information products online (some markets just don’t so there’s no point in targeting them)
* Find a gap in the market
* Write your ebook while promoting it to build your platform
* Sell your ebook while continuing to promote it”
Notice that I said: “Write your ebook while promoting it to build your platform” comes after “target a market.” You’ve got to find people who have a need.
Find people who have a need before you write your ebook
I promise you, it’s easy to target a market which ties into your own interests.
For example, let’s say you’re getting married. Since you’re a writer, you look at everything which happens in your life as fodder for your writing. Yes, this makes us horrible people, but that’s the way we are. So, you’re already thinking about how you can turn this wedding into words — words you can sell.
I hope you’re journaling. Your journals are prime fodder for writing ebooks. Journal about your upcoming wedding — primarily about the hassles. If something’s a hassle for you, it will be for others, too.
Not too many days from the time you start journaling, I guarantee you you’ll come up with more ideas for ebooks than you think possible. Anything to do with weddings constitutes a market — there are magazines for brides — so you know that you have a target market. Your own hassles (described in your journal) will help you to find a gap in the market.
Now all you need to do is write your ebook, while promoting it.
You can promote your ebook easily enough, and for free, with a blog.
