Freelance Writing Rates: $20 an Hour, or $200 an Hour

How much do you want to be paid for your writing skills?

Believe it or not, it’s pretty much up to you… and your platform.

In this week’s issue of Fab Freelance Writing Pro, we discuss platform. It’s THE major secret of highly paid writers.

Here’s an excerpt:

Introduction: Why Do You Need A Platform?

At its very simplest, your platform is who knows you and what you stand for. Your platform is your readers, your contacts, and your visibility.

Your platform is everything that you’ve done in your writing career, that gives you credibility.

I’m sure this is as clear as mud. :-) However, do bear with me. If you understand platform, you’re a writer in a million.

Most freelance writers never give a thought to their platform, until they start to write a book. Then platform becomes all-important. Before a traditional publisher will agree to publish your book, (which is a huge investment of time and money), the publisher wants to know that you have a platform. The company wants to know that you have readers who will buy your book.

Although platform-building as a concept started in the world of publishing, it’s also vital for all other freelance writers.

Your platform gives you credibility.

When someone enters your name into Google, he’ll assess your competence from the number of references to your name that he finds. No references, or very few, and he’ll assume that you’re a basic, generic writer, whose worth $20 an hour–if that.

On the other hand, if he enters your name into Google, and finds hundreds of thousands of references to your name, websites you’ve created, articles you’ve written, and ebooks you published, he’ll assume that you are at the top of your field. He’ll have no hesitation in paying your asking price — he will know that you’re worth it.

So in a nutshell, the difference between a $20 an hour writer and a $200 an hour writer is simply that–platform.
