Writing for the Web: What Every Writer Needs to Know

Writing for the Web is very different from writing for print, and many otherwise competent writers flounder when looking for jobs and getting established in the online world.

Let’s look at three things you need to know.

1. Learn by Doing, or Get Stuck in Pocket-Money Hell

Hate tech? if you’re completely non-geeky, you’ll need to overcome some of your dislike and fear of technical topics.

Firstly, you’ll need to establish your own website (sorry if that alarms you.) If you don’t, you’ll remain at the mercy of buyers of your writing skills who, frankly, don’t have your best interests at heart.

Your website is your home on the Web: anyone who Googles your name should be able to find your site, and should be able to hire you. You can post examples of your writing on your site, and can tell visitors exactly what it is you do, and how you do it.

Unfortunately, if you’re a technophobe and refuse to learn, you’re likely to stay in pocket-money hell: the only writing jobs you’ll find are those which pay little and demand much.

2. Clients Are Everywhere, but… What, Exactly, Are You Selling?

There’s never been a better time to be a writer. These days, if you can write a paragraph which makes reasonable sense, you can get hired to write.

This is all very well. Unfortunately most new Web writers do things the wrong way around. Instead of working out exactly what skills they’re selling, they hunt for “writing jobs”.

Please stop doing that, until you figure out what you’re selling.

3. You Just Need One Client, That’s All

All you need to start your Web writing career is one client. Get a testimonial which says you’re easy to work with, and did a great job, and you’re golden.

If you’re totally new, you must get testimonials, and then you need to build your client list. It’s much easier to get new projects from clients who know and love you, than it is to constantly look for new writing jobs.

So there you have it. The three things you must know to develop a successful Web writing career: establish your own website, decide what skills you’re selling, and get your first client.
