Blog Success: How to Get More Writing Clients (Editorial)

Got a blog? I sincerely hope you have. However, I know one thing for sure, and it’s this: even if you have a blog, you’re not leveraging this wonderful asset as much as you could.

What usually happens with writers’ blogs is this:

* They start off with a bang, but within months, they lose interest. This is because they get around 20 visitors a day, but those 20 visitors never seem to DO anything (clue: you must TELL THEM WHAT TO DO), or:

* They either never create a clear focus and goals for the blog before they start it, or they lose their focus quickly. This results in a lot of “cat” posts — posts which have nothing to do with your blog’s focus. You must know exactly what you want any blog to do before you set it up. Your writer’s blog not an “online journal”, or a daily diary of your miseries in the writers’ trade. It’s a powerful sales tool.

Let’s look at how you can use your blog (or blogs) to build leverage, and eventually get more writing clients than you can handle.

1. Create a Clear Path to Action for Your Blog’s Visitors

Before you set up your blog, do a little personal writing to get clear in your own mind about exactly what you expect the blog to do. I tend to document my processes obsessively, because I have so much going on. Over time, I’ve learned that if I create a project (a new blog, let’s say) on Monday, and don’t document exactly why I did it, and create review reminders for myself, I forget what my goal for the project was by Friday. This results in lots of confusion and wastes time and energy.

Developing a documentation strategy is a vital skill at all stages of your writing career, and it’s a good habit to get into.

In your documentation, include precisely what you want your visitors to do, and give them a reason for doing it.

Here’s an example.

Blog Goal: You want your blog to get new writing clients.

Path to Action: A content plan, regularly updated. In addition, at the end of each piece of content, write and post a small ad, something like this: get your _______ (whatever) written quickly and to budget. Contact me on ________ (phone number) to discuss your needs, and take advantage of my ______ (offer, whatever it is.)

2. Get Links and Traffic to Your Blog: the More Visitors, the More Sales

Each day, millions of pages are added to the Web. This means that you need to focus some of your time on getting traffic to your blog. The more traffic you get, the more buyers you get — it’s just numbers, nothing more nor less.

There are many ways to kickstart your traffic.

Google Places

Start by going to Google Places. Do a search, or try http://www.google.com/local/add this link may or may not work, depending on Google’s geo-targeting, so just search for Google Places.

Google Places gives you a wonderful link to your blog. Now, even if you don’t care about getting local clients (you should), this link adds lots of juice, and will bring you traffic.

3. Write Press Releases Whenever You Add a New Service

There are hundreds of free press release sites. Here’s a good one. Each time you add a new writing service, write a press release. These releases (write three a week for a month, and your life will never be the same), bring you traffic over time.

In conclusion, dear writer, please be aware that your blog can bring you all the success in your writing career you want and need. Treat your blog with respect, and you’ll be amazed at the results.
