Blogging is an easy way to gain expertise in web writing. Not only can you can set up a blog in minutes, but a blog can also help you to achieve any goal you care to set.
Here’s how to use a blog to get started web writing.
1. Set a Goal for Your Blog
What do you want your blog to do for you? Perhaps you want your blog to help you to sell your writing services. Whatever your goal is, write it down.
Next, decide who will read your blog. If you want to sell your writing services, your target readers will be those people who hire writers.
Think about the keywords which those target readers would type into a search engine to find your blog, and make a list of them. You’ll use these keywords in your posts.
2. Choose a Platform
If you’re new to web writing, choose a hosted service because it eliminates hassle. You can choose a free blogging platform like Blogger, or a paid service like Typepad. On a hosted platform, all the maintenance is done for you.
Over the years, I’ve come to realize the benefits of choosing a hosted service for a blog. Although most of my own blogs are on WordPress on my own domains, they require maintenance which costs me both time and money.
Be aware that if you choose to host your own blog, you will need to maintain it, and if you don’t have the technical expertise, you’ll need to pay someone to do it for you.
3. Create a Content Plan
You can write a blog post in ten minutes. However, unless you have a plan for creating content, chances are that you’ll be “too busy” to blog.
You can create a content plan for a month, or for just a week. I usually create plans for a complete month, for a new blog.
The benefit of planning your content is that you know exactly what you’ll be writing on any given day. Once you know, you can just do it. You can always find a spare ten minutes, even if it’s during your lunch hour.
4. Create a Promotions Plan
Once you’ve created some content for your blog (at least ten posts), you can start promoting it. (However, do keep creating content.)
Before blogging became so popular a couple of years ago, you could create a blog, and just rely on content to deliver traffic. These days, you need to promote your blog. Your promotions can be simple, but they’re necessary.
There you have it — an easy way to get started web writing by blogging. Within a short time, you’ll be both a blogging and web writing pro.
