Want to sell your writing services? The easiest way is with a blog. Some writers think that blogging is writing for “free”. On the contrary, you’re marketing for free.
When you blog in order to promote your writing services you’re getting free advertising. Advertising can be horrendously expensive, some writers spend several hundred dollars each week in advertising, but you don’t have to do that. (Although you can if you wish.
)
1. Your Blog Is a Marketing Tool
Remember that when you create your blog you’re creating it as a marketing tool. Your blog isn’t an online journal, in fact it has more in common with an online portfolio.
Before you create your blog, write a few sentences describing your target market. Who buys your writing services? Small businesses? Large corporations? Individuals?
The more you know about your target market, the more successful your blog and therefore your promotional efforts, will be. So please don’t omit this step. This is called “positioning” in marketing-speak.
2. Post to Your Blog Every Day for a Month
The biggest mistake I see writers making when it comes to blogging, is that they don’t create enough content for their blog. Remember that millions of webpages are added to the Web each week. Each page you create (that is each blog post), is a gateway for people to find you on the Web. The more pages, the more opportunities you have to be found.
After the first couple of months, your blog will be indexed by the search engines, and you can slow your postings. However you should post at least once a day every day for a month, and then at least three times a week for the next two months.
Think of every blog post you create as a writing sample.
If you have several specialties in which you write, create a new blog for each specialty. Many writers tend to create blogs about writing, but unless you’ve been writing for many years you’ll soon run out of things to write about. It’s much more sensible to create a blog which will attract visitors from your target market.
For example, let’s say that your target market is small businesses. You can blog about all those things which are of interest to small businesses; finance, marketing, and Web technologies — you’ll never run out of things to blog about.
3. Promote Your Blog on Twitter
The more links you have to your blog posts the better. An easy way to get links is via social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook. If you don’t already have accounts on these sites, create them.
When you follow easy method I’ve just described to you, you’ve have set a great foundation for your writing services business.
