Fast ebooks — you can do it too

in write and sell ebooks

I’m currently writing a new ebook (not writing-related), and since I’ve had several questions about the “how” of ebooks this past week, I’ll outline the process for you.

Creating an ebook and selling it is EASY… there are very few steps, and once you’ve done it once, you’ll get faster each time you do it. I’ve written so many ebooks on so many topics that I no longer think about the process; it’s automatic.

However, one thing never changes, and that’s the fun and excitement of creation. :-) I started my writing career writing romance novels, and enjoy writing long projects so much that I get depressed when a book’s complete.

So let’s look at how I’m going about writing and selling this particular ebook.

Tip: just Google anything in the following outline if you’re not familiar with the jargon.

1. I bought a domain name as soon as I got the idea;

2. I transferred the DNS to my Web host, and set up a “coming soon” index page, with an article on the topic of the ebook. This is so the site gets indexed; I want it to be indexed before the ebook’s ready;

3. I’ve started creating graphics for the site and ebook. Yes, I could outsource the graphics. However, I enjoy doing it, and my graphics guy disappointed me with unusable graphics the last time I outsourced, so there’s less hassle in doing it myself. And, as I create the graphics, I can feel my enthusiasm building…;

4. I outlined the ebook in ten minutes. I’ve been writing articles on the topic so I already know what I want to say;

5. I started writing. I’ll write around 1000 words a day until it’s complete. I can write the words in less than an hour, so it won’t take much time out of my day;

6. I’ll be creating a mailing list on the site before the ebook’s ready, so I can collect names and email addresses of people who are interested in the topic. With luck, many of them will buy once the ebook’s released;

7. I’ve started creating the sales page for the book. I love copywriting, it’s my primary field. With ebooks, I always write the sales page as I’m writing an ebook. This not only saves time, but keeps me on track — I want to be sure that I create as many benefits as possible for readers.

That’s about all there is to it. I should have the ebook ready to go by the end of November.

(By the way, writing and selling ebooks is just one of the topics we comprehensively cover in Sell Your Writing Online NOW (SYWON). It’s a must-have skill to build a great and profitable Web writing career.)

If you’re thinking about writing an ebook, I have just one message for you: stop thinking, and start writing! :-)
