Writing for Money: Build a Career on Writing for Free

Want to build a great writing career with a wonderful income? These days, your success as a writer may be measured by how much you’re willing to write for free. Although it sounds crazy, it’s a cunning plan.

“Me, write for free?!” I can hear you scream. As a professional writer, I’d never advise anyone to write for free. But I would advise that you advertise your writing services — how else can you get clients who are willing to pay you well?

Writing for free is actually writing for advertising purposes. I’ve never found any advertising which is more effective (and believe me I’ve tried). When you write to advertise your services, you save thousands of dollars.

So, here’s a three step plan any writer can use. If you’re a new writer, it will build your career. If you’re an established writer already, you’ll be amazed that you can triple your writing income quickly.

1. Create a Plan for Your Writing Career

Start by creating a plan. Your plan should include: what you’ll write, for whom you’ll write it, how much you’ll earn (a scenario), as well as a step by step task list to achievement.

Please don’t omit this step. It’s vital. I mentor writers, and the first thing I ask a new student to do is to create a plan. Your plan keeps you on track, and your plan’s biggest benefit is that it guides you to where you want to go, without fail.

2. Write for Free on Your Own Web Site to Display Your Skills

Next, get into the habit of blogging or adding content to your site consistently. Every word on your own site (or sites if you’re a real achiever) acts as an advertisement for you.

As the Web search engines index your pages, you’ll get more clients that you can handle — buyers of writing are desperate to find writers who can actually write. Many have been burned by so-called “writers” who’d have trouble writing the directions to the corner store.

3. Write Articles As Free Advertising
