Writers’ Web sites: master your online real estate

Writers are realizing that Web sites are online properties; virtual real estate. And as with physical real estate, your online properties can bring you income, and can be bought and sold.

I received several questions this week about creating Web sites, and how many you “should” have.

It’s easiest if we look at a typical scenario.

Jill (not her real name) is selling her writing services on one site. She’s also selling her link-building services, and wants to start selling Private Label Rights (PLR) content. She wonders whether she should create a site for each venture she has, or keep everything on one site.

In Jill’s case, I’d suggest that she keeps everything on one site for now. Everything she’s working on is related, and while her site is new, small, and not yet getting lots of visitors directly from the search engines, it’s easiest for Jill to publicize one site.

The areas she’s covering — writing services, link-building and PLR — aren’t glaringly disparate, so it will work well for her. Once she starts getting organic traffic from the search engines, she can make some decisions about whether to hive off her link-building or PLR. In the meantime, keeping everything on one site helps her to get known.

(By the way, I’m talking about getting known as a writer in next week’s podcast. Getting known as a writer is VITAL. It should be your primary aim, whether you’re a new writer, or are established.)

But getting back to how many sites you “should” have.

That’s completely up to you. I have many Web sites for writers. In addition, I have many, many sites in other niches.

When you’re starting out, keep most of your writing-related material together on one site. It helps. However, if you’re creating a content site in another area — budgeting, or European travel, or golf — then create a site for that topic.
