Making money writing involves two skills — creation and promotion. Both skills are equally important.

You Must Be Able to Write

You need the ability to write fast, while writing well, as well as the ability to write to a deadline. The people who hire you to write have deadlines of their own, and nothing annoys them more than missing their deadlines because you’ve missed yours.

When you start selling your writing services, it’s important that you create writing samples. Create samples of the kind of writing for which you want to be paid. For example if you want to be paid for writing articles, write articles on various topics. If you want to be paid for writing ebooks, write a couple of chapters of an ebook and an outline of the rest.

Once you have paid writing jobs, half of your writing time will be spent on your writing jobs and the rest of the time will be spent on promotion.

So make time to write every day, even if you don’t yet have any writing jobs. Write samples. Writing samples will get you writing jobs. I can’t emphasize this enough. Think about your writing from a buyer’s point of view. Would you hire someone without evidence of his abilities?

Your ability to write well will improve with practice.

You Must Promote Your Writing Skills

Now let’s look at promotion. People can only hire you if they know who you are.

You must promote your writing every day. Buyers usually need to hear your name many times before they will hire you. This is a function of two things. Firstly name recognition, and secondly, when they have a need for your services.

So how can you promote yourself? This depends on your own interests. I enjoy blogging, and article writing, so these are two ways in which I promote. You might enjoy interacting on forums, or using social media. If you have a budget you can advertise your writing services. How you choose to promote yourself is up to you.
