An ezine subscriber asks: “I’m getting $5 per article. You said that there are content writing jobs which pay $1 a word – how do I get them?”

Here’s my answer.

There are many different kinds of “content.” The article content you’re writing at the moment is useful for a Web site over time, because it attracts search engine traffic. As people search, the article content (once it’s indexed) is returned as a result for a search engine query, and visitors arrive at the site.

However, attracting traffic to a site is one thing. Getting those site visitors to perform a required action is something else. If the content you write gets visitors to ACT (that is, to buy, to leave their email address, or to make a phone call etc) it’s worth more money.

Think about it: if your content helps a business to make several million dollars a year, it’s worth the investment of whatever the writer chooses to charge.

I divide Web content into two main forms: information, and copywriting. Whenever you want to persuade people, it’s copywriting. So when you write persuasive content, you’re writing copy.

Persuasive copy might be just a Web sales page. It can also be a set of Web pages, or an entire site.

If you’re writing a complete small Web site for example, with five pages of 250 words each, that’s 1,250 words, and you could charge $1250 dollars – a dollar a word. That would be on the low side however. Experienced copywriters would charge at least $3000 for those 1,250 words, because there’s a lot of research, thought, and writing involved in getting results. There’s experience involved too, and that experience is vital.

So if you want to get paid $1 a word and more, realize that you need experience in persuasion – in copywriting.

How do you get that experience? You start with learning about copywriting in general, and then you experiment on your own site until you see results.

Writing Web content – experiment on your own site

Your own Web site is vital to your growth as a Web writer. It’s your own personal development laboratory.

Many writers treat their Web site as simply an advertisement. That’s a waste. USE your site. Try out things on the site. Learn what works. Then experiment on your own site to get results.

Once you start getting results, you will KNOW how something works. Then you can put that knowledge to work for others.

Here’s the bottom line if you want to be able to charge $1 or $2 or $4 per word. Be able to show that you can get the results the buyer wants. Then you can charge whatever you like.
