Your Writing Home Business – Get Started

Writing makes a great home business, but how do you get started? The tips in this article will help.

1. Understand Your Clients

Your home based writing business starts with your clients. When you’re a new writer, you’ll be working with clients who are new to hiring writers. This is because large businesses and publications which have experience in buying services only work with established professionals.

If you realize this – that your buyers are also new – you can take charge of the process. Decide what you’ll write and how much you’ll charge.

2. Get Clients Fast

Next, get some clients fast. There’s an old saying: “nothing happens until someone sells something”, and this applies to your business. Until you get writing projects, and complete them, your business is non-existent.

The easiest way to get clients is on the outsourcing sites. Look on these sites as a way to get testimonials. There’s a lot of under-cutting and bidding on price alone which goes on on these sites, but they’re a great way to get jobs fast. However you don’t just want jobs: you want testimonials.

The testimonials are vital because they will help you to build your business, so ensure that you make it clear to your buyers that the price you charge is contingent on them giving you a testimonial IMMEDIATELY you complete a project.

Remember what I said about these buyers being new to hiring service people? Take charge, and pester them until they cough up the testimonial.

3. Treat Your Business Like a Business

Your writing business is a business, so start thinking of it like a business, rather than a hobby. Schedule your time, and write when you’re supposed to be writing. If you share your household with others, you’ll need to teach them to respect your writing hours.

Be professional when working with clients: ask for a retainer, get your Terms of Services signed, and send your final invoice promptly.

4. Get a Web Site to Improve Your Business

You can’t work online without a Web site, so once you’re working with clients, make getting a site online a priority. You can post writing samples to the site, and over time, your site will mean that clients approach you, rather than you having to hunt for writing jobs.

You can start your writing home business today – so what are you waiting for?
