The big freelance writing secret: writing for inventory

Do you write for inventory? Creating an inventory of your writing products is the BIG secret to making great money as a freelance writer.

I’ve written a post “Writing to sell: forget your JOB, write inventory” on Writing Hacker which describes this process.

Here’s an excerpt:

If you want to sell your writing, you need to make that your goal.

Then, since SALES are your goal, you need to have something to sell.

I know this sounds completely and blindingly obvious, but I know from working with my students, that it’s not.

Many/ most writers start out by thinking of their writing as a J.O.B. (Just Over Broke). They want to be paid for their writing while they write.

This is fine, but unfortunately when you get paid for your services, you’re just being paid for your time, and that makes your writing a J.O.B.
