Copywriters are the money-making stars of the freelance writing world.

Copywriting used to mean writing advertising copy, but it’s essentially writing for business. A copywriter writes anything and everything business-related, from sales letters and ads to product manuals. Think of copywriting as writing to persuade, as well as to inform.

Get started copywriting: if you can write an email, you can write copy

You’re surrounded by copy every day, from the moment you get up in the morning until you fall asleep at night. You listen to ads on the radio, on the TV, and look at them on the Web. Your company may have a marketing department which is full of people who write copy; or your company may out-source copywriting.

I started writing copy for a business I was managing, and was asked to write copy for other small businesses.

Here’s a tip: most people find writing excruciatingly difficult, and will do almost anything to avoid it. If you find writing enjoyable, you’ll like copywriting. Why not ask your boss if you can take on small copywriting tasks at work? Copywriting is one of those activities where you learn by doing, and you’ll get an immediate response to the quality of your copy - it either does the job, or it doesn’t.

Experienced copywriters make anywhere from $80 and hour to $200 an hour and more, so if business writing appeals to you, copywriting may prove to be a lucrative writing field for you.

My ebook course “Seven Days To Easy Money: Copywriting Success, new 2007 edition”, gets you started developing your own copywriting services business.
