Writers’ self-publishing on the Web: make money from your writing skills

by angela.booth on August 9, 2007

I received several questions this week about the rapidly changing Web publishing arena from freelance writers who want to publish ebooks, and create their own niche Web sites so they can monetize them in various ways.

They’ve heard that there’s money to be made in Web publishing and aren’t sure how to get started.

So here’s the gist. :-)

Becoming a Web publisher: what’s involved?

Web publishing is a great venue for freelance writers with an entrepreneurial bent.

There are two primary ways you can make money as a Web publisher online: by publishing ebooks, white papers and reports; and by creating Web properties – either Web sites, or blogs, which you monetize in various ways.

Writing ebooks is an easy way to make money. Ebooks are shorter than print books, and highly specialized. Just select an area you know something about, and write an ebook.

For example, let’s say you’ve just discovered a way to save money on your mortgage that no one else knows about. Since everyone wants to save money on their mortgage, this is an ideal topic for an ebook.

You can write ebooks about anything at all; if there are people looking for the information, you will make money.

The second way to make money as a Web publisher is by creating Web properties, Web sites and blogs which you monetize in exactly the same way print magazines are monetized: by running advertising.

As with ebooks, you can create sites and blogs about anything at all, as long as their are people looking for information on the topic.
