Much of my email comes from new writers. If you’re a new writer, I hope this Q and A roundup helps.
Q: I love to write. How do I get paid to write?
A. Blog. Blogging is the fastest, easiest and simplest way to get paid to write. I’ve written an ebook - Blogging For Dollars - which gives you all the help you need.
Q: I don’t know whether I have the talent to make money from writing.
A: Talent has nothing to do with making money writing. Writing is a craft, and craftsmen and women learn their craft and practice it.
Practice is important, and the longer I write, the more convinced I am that the most successful writers are those who write the most. Write, and you’ll develop the skill to become a competent craftsperson. Read my “Top 70 Writing Tips To Help You To Write More”.
Q: I want to write, but I procrastinate
A: I used to procrastinate too, and still will, if I allow myself to. Read “Writing procrastination — how to end it forever” on my writing blog.
Q: I wrote an article for a magazine a year ago, and they haven’t paid me. It’s only $150, but the money means a lot to me. How do I get paid?
A. (I wrote this writer a detailed note on how to deal with deadbeat publications.) In general terms, here’s some advice to take to heart about getting PAID:
* Never write for publications or clients who won’t pay you a retainer. Yes, this cuts out the bulk of magazine commissions, and that’s a good thing. When you’re freelancing, you need to get paid for your time, on time. Learn how to write for the Web - read my ebook;
* Have the words “payment on invoice” on your terms of service in red, and bold;
* If someone is slow-paying you, dun them until they pay up. The squeaky wheel always gets the grease;
* Divorce your emotions as much as you can from the fees you charge and your invoicing. It’s just business. So treat your writing as a business. Getting paid is mainly a matter of your commitment to yourself - decide that you won’t put up with people ripping you off. Really, that’s all it takes. Maintain your professionalism at all times, and insist on the money you’re owed.
