There are two types of freelance copywriter. The first comes from a business and marketing background, and has no problems with marketing. The second type comes from a writing background, and as a writer primarily, is pretty flaky about marketing her writing skills.
I’m a mix of the two types. I’ve managed businesses so I know how marketing works. And before I became a copywriter, I was a novelist, so I know how writers think.
You need to understand which type of copywriter you are
Once you understand how your experience affects your copywriting, you can start to develop yourself in those areas in which you’re lacking.
The business person turned copywriter can spend time developing his writing skills, and the writer turned copywriter can develop her business skills.
You must build your marketing skills
If you don’t have a marketing background, it will help your copywriting practice enormously if you take a couple of marketing and public relations courses at your local college.
That said, copywriting is a skill which you develop on the job, so to speak. I’ve seen brilliant work done by new copywriters.
