Have you planned your freelance writing career?

Whenever I ask this question, the answer is usually “No”. A couple of writers have said that their career was planned, and these writers always came from a marketing background.

A business background showed them the value of their writing skills.

Since your writing skills ARE valuable, you need to plan.

Write a business plan for your writing career for the next three years.

Start with your goal in mind. Imagine a day three years from today. What does your career look like? Who are you writing for? How much are you earning from your writing in a month?

When you begin with a goal in mind, over the next few weeks, ideas and ways and means of how you can accomplish that goal will come to you, and you will start to move in that direction. Write down your ideas.

Focus on the WHAT, and less on the HOW. The HOW of accomplishment will develop as you take action, you don’t have the know the details in advance.

Your plan doesn’t need to be detailed. It can be as short as a single page. Whatever its length, your plan will help you to move in the direction in which you want to go.
