Although self-publishing gives you unlimited opportunities, it has its drawbacks as well. The biggest challenge?
You get to do it all. Yes, you can hire help, but the decisions rest with you. So do the expenses.
Self-publishing in 2019: readers matter, so why will they read your novella?
If you’re confused by your self-publishing options and opportunities, consider your readers. They’re confused too. They want entertainment, in the form of a good book. Time’s valuable, so they want to invest their precious reading time wisely… Why should they read your novella?
Let’s say you’ve written a novella. Your beta readers love it and you’re proud of it. You know that readers will enjoy it too, if they read it.
Getting readers starts with getting their attention. So, before you order a cover and write your blurb, think about what your novella offers.
Answer these questions, in writing:
- Why will readers (of your genre) want to read your novella?
- What makes your novella different and worth reading?
- What bestselling books is your novella similar to? (In setting, style, characters, tropes etc.)
- What excites you about your novella?
WRITE down the answers to your questions. Spend five or ten minutes on it; it’s important to your fiction’s success. The answers will help when when you order your cover and when you write your blurb.
Now let’s look at three easy tips you can use when you’re self-publishing novellas.
1. Decide on at least two goals for your novella
Before you start writing, think about what you want to achieve. Create two exciting goals for your novella.
In Set Your Writing Goals For 2019: 4 Tips You Can Use Today, we suggested:
If your goals don’t excite you, you won’t strive to achieve them. Ask yourself: “what goal, if I achieved it, would be thrilling?”
… Try journaling. Journaling can change your life. I’ve always found that when I journal, I not only get more done, I’m inspired too.
Journaling is important; it will help you to achieve your goals.
2. Create a quick plot (if you’re a pantser) or develop a quick outline (if you love outlines)
In our new program, Write And Sell A Novella In 7 Days: Your Blueprint For Success, you receive a step by step process for writing a novella in seven days.
I started a new novella series this morning; it’s historical fiction. Just as I did, you can start by filling in this simple template to start a novella:
- PLOT (1 sentence)
- Main character 1
- Main character 2
- Bad guy
Do a brain dump first, as suggested in Outlining: 3 Tips To Use Your Creativity And Outline Naturally:
What’s a “brain dump?” Basically you write down thoughts which come to you in a set period of time: ten minutes, half an hour… it’s up to you.
You have one rule when you brain dump: accept whatever you write no matter how bizarre and keep writing.
3. Set a deadline. Start book marketing to achieve your goals
Set a deadline as soon as you know the word count. Deadlines are vital for any writing project, even if they’re self-imposed. Any writing project can expand infinitely… You may already know this. 😉 So, set a deadline.
Start marketing too. Write And Sell A Novella In 7 Days: Your Blueprint For Success includes a complete program, but use any marketing strategies which appeal to you.
Essential: use Kindle pre-orders for your novellas. They’re free advertising.
Another essential — have fun with it.
