Two of the major benefits of writing serials are that you can publish faster, as well as get readers for your fiction faster than if you solely focus on writing novels.
We looked at ways to win readers for serials here, and said that:
In many ways, writing a serial is easier than writing a novel of the same length, but there are challenges.
I’ve received some questions about promoting serial fiction, so let’s look at easy ways to promote your serials today.
Yes, paid promotion works for serial fiction
Paid promotion works for serials. Of course your mileage may vary, depending on your genre and other factors. However, many authors find that they quickly recoup their advertising spend.
1. Set up pre-orders for each episode
Use Kindle eBook Pre-order, because as Amazon says:
… you can start promoting your eBook (we don’t currently offer pre-orders for paperbacks) before it’s released. You can promote your eBook’s pre-order page on Author Central, Goodreads, your own site, and elsewhere. Also, pre-orders will contribute toward sales rank and other Kindle Store merchandising even before your eBook’s released. This can help more readers discover your book.
Using pre-orders is a no-brainer; it’s free promotion.
2. Go wide and make the first episode free
If you choose to “go wide”, that is, make your serial available on lots of ebook retailers, you can make your first episode free, even on Amazon.
(New: Draft2Digital now offers Google Play, which allows you to set your price at zero easily.)
But… is it wise to offer a freebie?
Here’s my suggestion. If you’re spending money on promotions, go wide, rather than enrolling your serial in KDP Select. Then, once you’ve published several episodes, make the first episode free on Google Play. Amazon should price match automatically.

3. Use low-cost free ebook promotion websites
Kindlepreneur has an excellent list of sites here.
Using a bunch of websites takes a lot of time, so it will be worth hiring a personal assistant for this.
Why write serial fiction?

It's a quicker read too, and many readers appreciate this. While a reader may hesitate before committing hours to a novel, he can read an episode of your serial in minutes.More info →
