Are you new to writing copy? Here are some easy copywriting tips for beginners. Copywriting skills are valuable for all writers.
Copywriters write to persuade, so copywriting involves salesmanship, whether of a product, or a point of view. Vital: you’re selling to a specific audience, one person at a time.
You must understand your audience’s desires, and how to tap into them. If you can do this creatively, so that you’re on your audience’s wavelength, you’ll write successful copy which makes money.
What your client wants is just as important as what your audience wants, so the first question you’ll ask your client is: “What do you want the copy to do: what response do you want?”
It’s your job to get that response. These five tips will help you to do that.
1. SELL! Remember Your Calls to Action (Ask for the Sale)
Selling can be a challenge for many writers, we’re uncomfortable with it. So, know why you’re writing: you want your reader (or viewer, if you’re writing a script) to do something.
So yes, you must ask for the sale; but asking starts with the headline. Remember the old AIDA formula: Attract Attention, Inspire Interest, Arouse Desire, and Action (ask for the sale.)
Your words shouldn’t get in the way. See tip #2. You grab your reader with the headline and don’t let go until the reader takes the action you want him to take.
Each sentence leads to the next. When you’ve finished writing, study your transitions. Look for breaks in logic, and dull spots. Fix them.
2. Be Clear. Avoid Wordplay and Cuteness
Clarity trumps all. New copywriters want to be “creative,” which inevitably means word play. Please don’t do that. Your job is to sell. If you annoy your reader, you’ve lost him. Your copy must be transparent. Every word persuades: it never draws attention to itself.
If you catch yourself thinking: “that’s clever”, delete the sentence.
Yes, creativity is important, but your creativity lies in persuasion rather than the words you use.
3. Research the Product and Your Audience
The more you know about the product you’re selling, and the audience for the product, the easier writing becomes. Never skip research.
Researching basically consists of asking questions, getting answers, and asking questions again.
4. Plan Your Copy: Outline First
Words are cheap. You’re a writer, not a typist. Do lots of prewriting. I like to create mind maps, and write lots of headlines to get a grip on a piece of copy.
5. PLAY When You Write: Have Fun With It
Potential customers are sensitive to your copy’s tone. If you’re not completely relaxed and at ease, it comes through in the words.
My mantra is always “have fun with it.” There’s a simple reason: if you’re not enjoying yourself, you won’t be creative. Forget this at your peril.
