If I had a dollar for every time someone said to me “blogging doesn’t work!” I’d be buying fillet steak to feed my dogs. Blogs sell. If yours doesn’t, you can change that.
Hard-working bloggers rake down incomes of a million dollars and more. Others turn their blogs into thriving businesses. And hundreds of thousands of bloggers make full-time incomes.
The old “blogging is dead” claim still makes the rounds at least once a year. However, savvy bloggers know that a blog is an amazing sales tool.
Recently I was speaking to a veteran blogger who gave up blogging for six months. “How did that work out for you?” I asked.
“It was sheer misery.” She told me that because she wasn’t creating blog content, she was spending more money on advertising. “A lot more, but it wasn’t just the money. I spent at least an hour a day working on my ads. When I started, I hired someone to do the advertising for me, but that didn’t work out so well. Then I hired someone else. That didn’t work out either.”
When she calculated the amount she’d spent on advertising, as well as the cost of her time, she was ready to relaunch her blog.
Blogging: still the least expensive way to advertise
Advertising is expensive. It also takes time because every advertising venue has its own particular quirks.
Let’s look at three ways to make your blog sell for you.
1. Use your blog to make your promotions work
Today, you need to advertise. Everyone complains about advertising, and the money that they spend on it. Unfortunately today there’s no way around it. You need to advertise, but at least your blog helps you to get the most from your advertising dollars.
Use your blog to boost your advertising. For example, if you know that you’ll be launching a new book in three months, start blogging about your new book now.
Get ready to take pre-orders, and offer bonuses to readers who buy your book on launch day. This kickstarts Amazon’s algorithms; Amazon will help you to sell more books.
2. Make your advertising dollars go further with blogging
The person who complained to me about blogging not working simply wrote her blog. She didn’t promote at all. I suggested that she spend a few dollars on Facebook advertising every month.
To that end, she had to sort out exactly what she was selling. She needed to understand her target audience, and Facebook advertising would help with that.
I also suggested that she develop a product and sales strategy.
3. Develop a products-and-sales strategy
What are you selling from your blog? Perhaps you’re selling writing services, or books. Whatever you’re selling, you need a product strategy.
You need to launch new products regularly, as well as develop promotions for your current products.
It takes time to create new products (books or courses). Consider affiliate marketing, which gives you thousands of products and services you can sell without having create your own.
A student who did our blogging course several years ago now makes much more money from her affiliate sales than she does from selling her writing services.
Her best tip? Source products which are new. “When a product is new, there’s little competition in promoting it.”
Beyond selling affiliate products, you can of course create your own products to sell. If you’re selling ebooks on Amazon, or print books, promote them on your blog. Do remember: savvy authors promote their books as soon as they start writing them.
