Writing short stories has many benefits for savvy writers. Not only can you kickstart your self-publishing career, but you can also use short stories for promotion.
Our class, Story Power: Write and Sell Short Fiction, is currently available at a special price to help you to make the most of short fiction.
Short stories can kickstart your book sales
Last year, as an experiment, my Advanced Fiction class and I did a little experiment. We’d each write five short stories — 10,000 words and under — and sell them for $2.99.
Several authors quailed at this. I got many objections, and “yes, but” comments. When you’re fixated on price, and sell full-length novels at $2.99, it can be hard to envision buyers happily buying short stories at that price.
The brave souls who joined me in the experiment have been happily selling their $2.99 short stories for months.
I admit that I’m surprised too. I’ve asked, and none of our group has been advertising the short stories — they sell anyway. Go figure.
Short stories help you to promote your fiction: they’re “tasters”
I primarily use short stories as promotions. And no, I don’t give them away — I sell them. They’re set in the story world of a couple of series, so they act as easy entrées to the series.
A reader might not want to commit to reading a novel; they can finish reading a short story quickly.
