As you may know, I love blogging. I’ve been doing it happily for over 16 years, and have lots of blogs. Looking back, I can see that the habits I got into with blogging have helped all my writing. I have a busy and fun copywriting practice, ghostwrite fiction and nonfiction, and I coach writers too. Believe it or not, blogging every day isn’t a distraction from all that… Blogging helps me to deal.
Because you CAN. And because it will make you a better writer. Writing is a muscle. If you exercise it, it grows. It takes you in new directions… BECAUSE you’re writing.
Here’s what I know. You can sit down without a thought in your head, totally uninspired, but know that you need to write a blog post. You write a sentence. Any sentence. Then another one. A few sentences later, inspiration strikes, and words flow from your fingertips.
I don’ expect you to believe me. This process is experiential. Blogging teaches you that you’re always inspired, as long as you have the courage to write your first sentence.
Before I started to blog, I had many doubts. Remember, this was back in 1999, when blogs were “online journals.” I intuitively felt that I NEED TO BLOG. I ignored my intuition. I thought that my intuition was an idiot. Writer friends with whom I discussed blogging told me I was crazy… what, write for FREE?
My intuition kept plaguing me. So I started blogging, and haven’t stopped. It’s a habit. A good one.
