In case you’re in any doubt, you can make money writing over the holidays. Several writers have mentioned that: “it’s hard to get writing jobs at this time of the year.”
NO. It’s not. As I said in the ezine, December/ January/ February is the busiest time of the year for writers. Your clients are selling, and selling some more, and they need you.
Look around you. Retailers are hard at work. Companies which supply the retail trade, ditto. Every business is working on their current projects, and is launching new projects. A few companies close down over the holiday period, between Christmas and the new year, yes.
In Australia, it’s summer holiday time in January. The period from December 15 to January 15 is known as the “silly season”, because it’s vacation time. However, not everyone goes on vacation. Companies keep doing business. Publications keep going.
Please DO NOT wander off thinking: “I can’t get writing jobs at this time of the year.” That’s nonsense. You can. Just like any other business, you keep trading.
“Let me know if I can help out”
Tip: send out a quick — “let me know if I can help out” message to current and past clients. You’ll get some work out of it. And if you’re not going away for Christmas, you can let them know that you’re available for rush jobs between the years… with a small, surcharge, of course.
What kind of surcharge? That’s up to you, but 30 per cent sounds about right. You can make it 50 per cent, if you like. I charge a 30 per cent surcharge for weekend and holiday work.
If you’re not super-busy, use The Professional Writers’ Pitch Book, and get pitching. You can hope that your writer colleagues are lazing the holiday days away, but you can make money writing over the holidays, so make your own plans now. You can have a profitable holiday season, and make it the best time of the year for your writing. 🙂
