Do you “hate” marketing your books? Many writers do. However, as I say in Marketing Your Book in 5 Minutes a Day, the marketing training course which is part of Nonfiction Ebook Superstar: Write and Sell In 24 Hours Or Less, chances are that you dislike it because you’re unprepared.
You need to do some prep before you start, that is, create some marketing collateral – basic materials:
Once you have lots of marketing “creative”: collateral such as book covers, advertising images, CTAs (calls to action, a form of advertising), taglines, blurbs, and topic areas, you’ll find that marketing is huge fun.
Think of marketing as an expedition. Without the proper clothing, supplies and preparation, chances are you’d HATE your trip. If you were going on a wilderness expedition, you might not even survive. You will survive marketing… indeed, you’ll come to enjoy it.
You Can’t Market Without Materials.
When I’m working with students, our first step is always to create our marketing materials. It needn’t take long, and you’ll use those materials in the weeks and months to come.
Next, Create a Little Plan.
After you’ve created some materials, you can create a plan. Your plan should be something that you will DO: so keep it short. I like to keep it to five minutes a day, maximum, per book. You can do a great job in 20 minutes a week, once you’ve got your collateral.
Automate where you can. I use Buffer extensively, so that I can schedule tweets and posts to Facebook and Google+ Pages. Hootsuite does much the same thing. However, don’t automate everything, otherwise it becomes boring.
If you’re writing nonfiction, you need to get your books written, published, and marketed – save the graphic in Write Nonfiction: Information Sells; it gives you the basic steps.
