Want to write to sell? I wrote Write to Sell: 10 Fast Writing Sales You Can Make Any Day over a year ago, and updated it because writers who are making $20 an hour keep telling me that “my clients won’t pay more”. You need to be proactive, and imaginative… and determined to get great clients. They’re out there, waiting for you to contact them… 🙂
“Write to sell” is a mindset.
Develop a FAST mindset. In the article, I said:
One of my best friends can’t help herself. If she’s in a restaurant, she’ll tell the owner how to improve his menu. She writes to companies to tell them their packages or letters stink. She sells jokes to local entertainers.
She has a great writing business because she’s always looking for communications which can be improved. Of course, she finds them. She’s one of the busiest writers I know. She charges by the project and her hourly rate is $300 an hour.
Start looking at the communications you get. Who’s sending you letters? What’s in your junk mail? Contact companies which could do better with their communications, and offer to help them.
Of course, this tactic works best for copywriters. The world’s full of crappy copy, sadly. However, it can work for any writer. Think about what’s happening in your life. Are you getting married, or hoping to? Having a baby?
You’ve got three great markets there: romance/ dating, weddings, and babies.
Consider the dating market. What if you created a writing service that created profiles on dating websites? You could offer this service in your signature file on forums, and promote it on social media.
We talked about love letters in the article. You could offer romance letter-writing services. Why not?
There’s a big benefit to offering oddball (in a nice way) services like this: publicity. News websites and magazines are always looking for cute stories. You’d be able to get free publicity for this service very easily.
In fact, I suggest that you start offering some weird and wonderful services just for the publicity.
It gets your name out there. Think of the bragging rights you have if you approached future clients by saying: “You may have read the stories about my writing services in _____ (publications.)”
In summary: there are endless FAST gigs out there, which pay well. You can get them. 🙂
