This week our theme is “Christmas in July”. Savvy writers know that they need to go after the holiday writing jobs they want. Those holiday writing jobs can pay off right now, as soon as you contact clients.
BIG TIP: the Christmas sales bonanza gives you an excellent reason to contact clients. Both publications and businesses need writers for holiday promotional material. Magazines will give you the go-ahead on stories, because they need to get issues to the printer long before the holiday. Businesses want to nail down the content they need.

“Get holiday-season writing jobs now
In the northern hemisphere, once September arrives, staff’s summer vacations are out of the way. It’s time for businesses to gear up for the holidays because that’s when many business make the bulk of their annual incomes. Orders are placed with suppliers, plans are made for Christmas-season promotions.”
What to say when you contact people
Remember, you contact clients NOW. I can’t emphasize this enough. NOW is the time to get writing jobs — not a month from now. Publications need your content. Businesses have the upcoming holidays looming. Everyone you contact has a million and one concerns. They appreciate the fact that YOU contact them early.
So, what do you say when you contact people?
Start by getting in touch with past clients. Say something like: “Hi ___ (client name) — the holiday season will be upon us before we know it. I enjoyed working with you on ____ (a past project) and I’d love to work with you on holiday promotions. I’m taking bookings now, and would love to speak with you. Please call me at any time. I’ll be in touch next week to follow up.”
Customize this note to suite your own needs, of course. Keep it short. You just need to: remind the prospect who you are, that the holiday season is coming, that you’re taking bookings (the implication being that they need to hire you now), and that you’ll call them.
Once you’ve contacted all your past clients, it’s time to go fishing for new prospects.
By all means, use whatever form of marketing you usually use, and consider using Google+ too. I’m becoming more and more enamored with Google+.

Index your pages almost immediately
Part of the reason Google launched Google+ was to be able to compete with the real-time advantage Twitter had. Google has therefore made it almost instant for content and links being shared on Google+ to appear in their search results.
Publishing a new blog post about a product launch and want it to appear in Google quickly, make sure you share it on your Google+ account then.
