Develop your SEO skills: they’ll seem like magic to your clients
If your clients have websites, they’ve been affected by the ongoing Google updates. This provides a HUGE opportunity for you, the competent freelance writer.
Your clients need you, and they need you to be up to speed on search engine optimization (SEO.) Although you don’t need to be an SEO wizard (that would be impossible, because SEO requires advanced Web engineering skills at the highest levels), it’s essential that you understand how today’s increasingly complex content and search landscape affects writing for the Web.
In this article, we’ll look at five easily-understandable points you can make to your clients to sell them on your SEO-enhanced content creation services. It’s an easy sell.
1. Content Must Be New: the Search Engines Value Freshness
Way back in 2010, Google CEO Eric Schmidt told Techcrunch that every two days, “we create as much information in two days now as we did from the dawn of man through 2003.” Three years later, it’s much worse. There’s a constant flow of new content onto the Web.
It’s no longer possible for ALL content to be found, just the very latest content.
This means that you need to convince your clients of the value of a constant supply of new content, which you will write for them, of course.
2. Keywords Are Vital: Think Like a Buyer
It’s no longer possible to sprinkle keywords onto a piece of content like bacon bits over a salad, and expect to dust off your hands with your SEO commitment done.
However, the search engines are still basically just indexing scripts, so just as you’d create an index for a book, you need to provide the search engines with keywords. Without the right keywords, content won’t be found, no matter how fresh it is.
3. Social Media Isn’t Optional: Promote Your Content (Sell Packages to Clients)
Many of your writing clients are confused by social media. The rest have a “prove it” attitude. They’re convinced the social media is over-puffed madness. “Our customers aren’t on Twitter…” they’ll tell you.
Social media may not matter to many of your clients. However, it does matter to the search engines.
Sell your clients Web content packages which include social media. It’s essential in SEO terms.
4. Flashing Lights Attract Readers: Think “Headlines” and “Media”
Now we’ve got the basics out of the way; it’s time to dress up your content. Not only does this appeal to readers (customers, to your clients), it appeals to the search engines too.
Make use of the “page title” attribute: use it for the search engines. Then use headlines on your content to appeal to readers and catch their attention.
Also, consider media like images, videos, and audio. Although you won’t create these materials yourself, they’re important to both attract readers, and to enhance webpages for the search engines.
Plain text is always vital to the search engines. However, remember the never-ending stream of content pouring online every day. Media will lift your content above similar content which is just plain text.
5. Link, Link, and LINK –Internal Linking Is Essential
The Web search engines are spiders, climbing across the sticky webs of the Internet. Link new content to older content on your clients’ websites, so that older content enhances the new. Search engines love links.
Now you have five ways to sell your content creation services to your clients. Will you use them? I hope you do. If you don’t, another writer will. Your SEO skills affect your writing income.
Combine SEO skills with your writing skills today. Sell your skills to your clients. They’ll love you for it, and so will your bank account.
