Your success as a freelance writer depends on your fame — not celebrity-style fame, but fame among those who need your services. The more you’re known, the more steady, reliable and high your income. Your fame builds with every word you write.
You must build your fame, because freelance writers are in high demand. This high demand means that while there are many so-called “writers”, there are few competent ones. Clients are looking for YOU; it’s up to you to help them to find you.
My own freelance writing career spans three decades. When I started, freelance writing was a precarious profession. These days, it’s more secure than many other professions. Writers’ incomes have gone up since the global financial crisis.
So how do you develop your freelance writing fame?
You can do this in two primary ways.
1. Encourage Clients to Refer You to Others
Every project you complete builds your fame. Just encourage your clients to refer you to others. Most clients are happy to do this, if you let them know that you’re looking for additional clients.
If you wish, you can add a financial incentive. Let’s say you’ve just completed the content for a website, for which you’ve been paid $1200. When you ask for feedback, let your client know that you pay ten per cent for referrals.
Here’s the reason this works — it’s not the money. It works because you’re acting professionally. It helps your clients to remember you, and they will refer you.
2. Develop an Online Presence: It’s an Investment
Professional writers have websites. Your website means that you can charge appropriately for your services. It’s proof that you’re a writer.
If you don’t have a site, you’re crippled.
If your name and examples of your writing don’t appear when someone Googles you, you’re crippled.
You need to be visible online, it’s an essential investment. It develops your credibility, and builds trust.
Add your website address to your business cards. Even if you’re the world’s shyest networker, you can hand out business cards to everyone you meet. Your website will do the rest, and that’s why you need one.
If you’d like to be paid a dollar a word, rather than five cents a word, please realize that your website and online presence are the key.
Your fame as a freelance writer builds word by word, and spreads, like ripples on a lake, as more people get to know you. Your clients need you: it’s who knows you, rather than who you know.
