Got a blog? That’s excellent. Your blog is a property: an asset, just like your home. When you understand this simple concept, you’ll treat your blog with the love and respect it deserves.
Let’s look at five easy ways you can have fun and make money with this online property: your blog.
1. Create an Editorial Calendar
Let’s stay with the property metaphor. If you have a home, you have a house, with its contents, a garden and landscaping, perhaps a pool… maybe you want to build a greenhouse…
Similarly, what makes a blog? The short answer is content. Content which helps you to make money.
Therefore, your most important task as a blogger is to add relevant content to your blog. The operative word is “relevant.” Just a home is created for a family, your blog is created for a family of readers, who have particular interests.
Failed bloggers go astray when they forget their readers in order to focus just on content. Before you know it, a blog which start out as a useful resource for overweight people desperate to lose weight either stops abruptly — there’s no more content — or the content wanders off track and becomes irrelevant to dieters.
Planning your content not only ensures that you’ll keep readers, it also ensures that your income from blogging will steadily increase.
2. Brainstorm Content Ideas
I’ve been writing for well over 30 years. I know what works for me, and for my students. Over time, I’ve learned to sharply separate planning, drafting, writing, and content delivery. They’re all stages of the writing process, and they all demand different mindsets.
Therefore, create your editorial calendar on a different day from drafting your posts, AND on a different day from writing your content.
Most bloggers stop blogging because they run out of steam. They’re mired in a stodgy mindset. Get out of your office, or wherever you habitually write. Go to a cafe, or your local park, or even to a sporting event. Brainstorm there.
When you’re out of your office, your creativity will flow. I tend to get most of my ideas while driving, so I do lots of brainstorming in my car.
3. Focus on Your Readers: Who Are They?
Your readers are your blog’s family. They’re the reason you’re writing. Think about them. Be hospitable when they arrive. Nourish them. Remember, your blog is their home. Make them comfortable — help them to thrive and grow.
4. Money, Money, Money…
I teach writers and bloggers. If a student’s blog isn’t making money, the reason is that the student didn’t plan to make money when he created the blog. He assumed that somehow the money would flow. That’s rarely the case.
If you want to make money from your blog, you need to find money-making opportunities when you plan your blog. Often, you’ll have a great idea for a blog, but when you research opportunities, you’ll find very few. Drop that idea, no matter how much you love it.
If your blog isn’t making money, and you can’t find plentiful opportunities for monetization, stop blogging. (But don’t delete your blog.) Find a topic you can monetize.
5. Repurpose Your Content
Your content is valuable. Make the most of it by repurposing it. Create videos from your content, or ebooks. Write short reports based on your content and sell them.
Just as your home is a valuable asset, so is your blog. One of my favorite sayings is “Always be selling.”
Remember that your blog is a valuable asset, and as you keep creating content, it’s up to you to make the most of it.
