Although this article is aimed at the Web site owner, the information it contains is just as useful for freelance Web writers – so keep these different content types in mind, and you’ll never run out of article ideas you can pitch to your clients.
Every Web site needs content to attract traffic, and one of the easiest ways of creating content for your site is by writing articles. When they’re indexed by the search engines, your articles bring a constant stream of visitors to your site.
Once you have this traffic, you can monetize it in many ways: you can sell products, sell advertising, or can even sell paid memberships to areas of your site.
Many people find writing articles difficult however. After you’ve written a few articles on your site’s topic, you run out of ideas. What will you write about?
Let’s look at five unique content types to help you to generate ideas for articles.
1. Comparisons – help your visitors to compare products
Many of your visitors are ready to buy an item, and are researching so they can make a purchase decision. They need information. If you offer product comparisons, your articles will act as magnets. Comparison articles tend to be evergreen content – they stay at the top of the search engine results pages for years.
2. Industry information – make your site an authority
The more content your site has, the more authority it develops with the search engines. Turn your site into an industry leader with articles about your industry: history, news, trends, and controversies.
3. Let your site’s visitors tell you want they want
Your site’s referrer logs are a great source of unique article ideas. It’s said that at least 25 per cent of search engine queries are totally unique. Look through your visitor logs regularly and you’ll never run out of article ideas.
4. Write articles about problems your visitors face
Everyone has challenges, and everyone wants solutions to those challenges. Make a list of ten challenges your visitors face. Then write a series of articles – one or more articles offering help for each of those challenges.
5. Think seasonal for evergreen article topics
Christmas, St Valentine’s Day, Halloween – think in terms of holidays and seasons to create article topics.
Seasonal articles are evergreens: you’ll get a mass of traffic to your site year after year.
So there you have it: five unique content types which will help you to generate hundreds of article topics. Add a couple of articles to your site each week, and before you know it, your site will be one of the most popular sites in your industry.
