Advertising on your writer’s Web sites

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

A quick tip regarding advertising on your sites.

As you can see, Fab Freelance Writing Blog runs various kinds of advertising.

However, on my other professional writing sites, like Hot Web Copy and ContentBee, there’s no third-party advertising.

Why advertise on some sites, and not on others?

It’s all about focus.

On those primary sites on which you portray a professional image, I recommend that you don’t use third-party advertising.

Keep the focus on your writing services. On other sites you create for monetization, have it at - use third-party advertising to your heart’s content.

Freelance writing connections - links equal income

You need connections online, specifically LINKS to your Web site so that people can find you.

Links to your Web site help you in two ways:

* They bring buyers of your freelance writing services directly to your site; and

* They lift your site in the search engine rankings, so that when someone types “freelance writer” into a search engine, your site appears.

Links are VITAL… links are the currency of the Web. You’ll make money from any links to your site. This is why promotional tactics like article marketing work so well, they give you links to your site.

Since links are so necessary, in Lesson 3 of SYWON I give members two links from my sites. One is a straight link, the other is a blurb on ContentBee.

Here are easy ways to get links to your site:

* Use Craigslist and other free classifieds sites

* Write articles for the article directories

* Join relevant forums (NOT writer’s forums, because writers can’t hire you)

* Trade links with other sites

* Write comments on blog posts - useful comments are always welcome

* Create a Squidoo lens to your site

* Post to Twitter - follow me on Twitter, and you’ll see I post to Twitter every day

You must make connections online, and these happen via links. On the Web, the more links you have, the more income you will make as a freelance writer.

Your writer’s Web site is the hub of your writing life

Think of your writer’s Web site as the hub of your freelance writing business. Whatever you’re doing, you should be adding it to your Web site.

For example:

* Add queries you’re sending out to magazines

* Add book proposals you’re shopping around to publishers

* Add news about your latest gigs, and your latest products, if you’re writing ebooks and reports (as you should be doing, for passive income.)

I see many writer’s sites, and few writers make the most of their sites.

It’s vital that you get as much content on your site as possible. Each page on your site operates as a gateway for clients to find you. Have as many gates as possible.

If you’re a Web writer, this is even more important. Not only should you have a “hub” site, the center of your Web writing, you should also create new sites for each ebook or other product you create.

BIG TIP: Add your LOCATION to your site

Where are you? Whether you’re living in a large city, or on a farm in the middle of nowhere… No matter which country you’re in, the publishers, business people and agencies in your area need writers.

It’s blindingly simple to add “New York”, “Sydney” or “Dublin” to your site’s pages.

People looking for writers will often add a location to their search query, and even if they don’t, search engines like Google use geo-targeting. That is, in response to queries, they take the searcher’s location into account. So for people in Your Town in Your State, and Your Country, you may well be the writer who pops up as the first offering on the query results page.

Use your writer’s site as the center of your freelance writing business, it’s vital.
