Freelance writing and fear of failure

Freelance writing takes courage.

I received a message this week from a blogger who’s worried that his blog will fail.

My blogging correspondent hadn’t yet launched his blog. He was trying to find a niche which would make him a great income, but which had little competition.

He may well be looking forever. The fact is that if your niche, for example growing mushrooms on a roof garden, has little competition, it’s almost certainly not profitable. I advised him to choose a niche about which he’s highly enthusiastic, and not to concern himself about competition. If there are competitors, it means that there’s money to be made in the niche.

His first choice of niche was self help, but he was scared of the competition. I told him to launch his self help blog. He’s an individual, he’s suffered challenges in his life and has overcome them, so I’m sure his self help blog will get readers and will make money.

No one likes failure. But as writers, we have to be willing to write anyway. Will his self help blog succeed? YES… as long as he commits to writing it.

Managing fear of failure

Fear of failure is common for writers, but it’s also pretty pointless, for two reasons:

* Your biggest success may come from a failure - you may need to go through the failure to get to your success

I’ve “failed” many times as a writer, and so has every other successful writer I know. Those failures were ALL golden, even if I didn’t think so at the time. I failed my way to my first multi-book contract, for example.

That taught me that nothing you write is ever wasted.

* It’s impossible to fail at writing - once something is written, it’s written, and you can always use it somewhere

If our blogging friend’s blog “fails” (I don’t see how it can, but for the sake of argument), he’ll nevertheless have material online which he can monetize, and which will bring him an on-going income.

He’ll make contacts via his blog too. He’ll be offered opportunities to write and make money simply because his blog is online. He may be offered a book contract, blog jobs, and other opportunities he can’t even imagine.

There’s only one way you can fail at freelance writing - and that’s when you stop writing. So write. :-)

Your Web presence as a writer - build your writing income in 2008

Here we are at the start of 2008, and looking around the online world, a lot has changed for writers since the start of 2007.

The most important change is that the move to the online world has accelerated. The media world is much more Web-based: magazines and newspapers are online with a vengeance, and they’re putting more resources into their online presences. Advertising is moving online, so where the advertisers go, the media follows.

New media networks are growing and are hiring more writers.

So where do you fit into all this? I hope you’ve created your writers’ Web site and blog, and that you’re building your presence online: this is the only secret to writing success in 2008 and beyond.

The biggest benefit for writers of an online presence is that your target markets (the people to whom you want to sell your work) are already looking for you online. This means that they come to you - you don’t have to go hunting for writing gigs.
