Blog - 3 Hidden Benefits of Blogs for Writers

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Want to blog? Many writers are hesitant about blogging, until they start. Then they realize that a blog can super-charge their career.

Why are blogs great for writers? Simply because your writing career depends on both your writing proficiency and speed. Yes, speed - if you can write fast, you’ll win many more writing jobs than writers who are slow.

A blog, because it’s a commitment, will turn the slowest turtle of a writer into a speed king… or queen.

Let’s look at three hidden benefits of blogs for writers.

1. A Blog Forces You to Improve Your Writing Proficiency - Your Speed and Skill

Editors, business people and other buyers of your writing want a fast, reliable writer. Yes, you must be able to write well, but you must write quickly on demand: others depend on you.

If you speak to established writers, they’ll often tell you that they got their big break when an editor needed to fill a hole in a publication (or even a publisher’s book list) because another writer dropped the ball.

When you become a writer who’s both fast and reliable, you’ll never run out of writing jobs - your buyers will approach you, and will stay with you for years.

So how do you get fast and reliable without a long list of clients? You blog. Your blog forces you to commit, and to write.

2. A Blog Helps You to Become Less Self-Conscious and Smoothes Your Style

New writers “write.” Experienced writers communicate. It’s only by writing for publication often (every day), that you lose your self-consciousness. You just get on with it, and say what you’ve got to say.

Unfortunately there’s nothing you can do to eliminate your self-consciousness; you just have to write enough so that you no longer care how you’re perceived, you just want to get your message across. A blog is a big help with this.

3. a Blog Builds Your Confidence - a Confident Writer Is a Selling Writer

Once you’ve conquered self-consciousness, you need to build your confidence. Only sales will help you to get confident.

A blog will help you to make those sales. The mere fact that you have a blog, and update it regularly, shows buyers that you can write, and that you are probably reliable. To buyers who are new to your writing, you’re no longer a pig in a poke writer; you’re a known quantity.

If you don’t have a blog, start one today. If you do have a blog - update it. You’ll be amazed at the effect on your writing career.

How to Make Money Online by Writing a Blog

Want an easy way to make money online? Write a blog - not only will it be an ongoing source of income for you, you can also turn it into the perfect home business. Get started today - here’s how.

A blog is just a Web site. However, because most blogs use an underlying database to manage their content, they’re considerably easier to create than the average Web site. They’re also easier to manage. You can create a page for your blog without worrying about structure and navigation, so blogging is fast and simple.

This makes blogs perfect for online entrepreneurs, both new and established. You can set up a blog within minutes, and have it earning income for you very quickly.

So how do you make money online by writing a blog?

Let’s look at three ways in this article. Here’s an important tip - ensure that you decide how you will make money with your blog before you create it. This is vital. Your blog needs focus. The more focused it is, the more traffic you will get, and traffic translates into income.

1. Sell Affiliate Products - you get a commission

Affiliate marketing is the perfect way to make an money online by writing a blog. All you need to do is find affiliate products which you can promote on your blog. Some bloggers make six figure incomes, just by promoting others’ products.

There are hundreds of thousands of affiliate programs online. Investigate them and choose what you want to promote before you create your blog.

2. Sell Advertising on Your Blog - you get regular monthly income

Once your blog is established, you can sell advertising on your blog. There are primarily two ways of doing this - by joining advertising networks, and by selling advertising yourself.

Joining advertising networks like Google AdSense is simple. However, because it is so simple, your income will be low. As soon as possible, once your blog has good content, sell advertising yourself.

3. Sell Your Own Products on a Blog - sell digital and other products

Once they get a taste of making an income from their blog, many bloggers take the next step, to selling their own products on their blog. This is because when you sell your own products, you have control, and you get to keep all the profits from your sales.

So there you have three ways to make money online by writing a blog - get started today.

Blog jobs - get the best jobs with a plan

Why blog? There are many reasons, but for freelance writers, the primary reason is to get writing jobs.

In 2008, there’s another reason - to get blog jobs.

Big tip: realize that blogging isn’t blogging as much as it’s Web publishing. In other words, blogs are publications, just like magazines. And like magazines, they have requirements and needs.

The more you can anticipate those needs and fulfill them, the more blog jobs you will get.

Have a PLAN before you apply for blog jobs

Every since I wrote Blogging For Dollars, I’ve had writers contacting me who complain about low-paying blog jobs, when I tell them that bloggers can and do make six and seven figures annually.

You can too, as long as you have a plan. Without a plan, you flounder taking low-paying gigs and wondering why you’re not making more money.

As I said in “Web writing equals article profits - maybe”:

No one tells you what to charge online, so if you want to accept low rates for your articles, that’s completely up to you. No one will ever pay you more than the prices you set.

Unfortunately, pricing is largely a matter of experience, and some new (and even established writers) have no clue how or what to charge.

You need to blog, and become part of the blogosphere, so you know the value of what you do. Blogging is a wonderful way to make a part-time or full time income, but you need to blog yourself, and make contacts with other bloggers, to get the top blog jobs - and to make money writing your own blogs.

Most of all, you need a PLAN. I emphasize planning in Blogging For Dollars, and following your plan.

So what might a “blog job plan” look like?

Off the top of my head:

1. Create a blog

2. Add content to the blog

3. Let people know you’re available for blog jobs (there are many ways to do this, both on your own blog and off it)

4. Approach other bloggers, offering guest posts and reviews, for FREE (this is so you get known)

5. Approach companies to blog for them - propose blogging solutions, in other words.

ETC.

I’ve covered everything you need to know in Blogging For Dollars. If you need more, you can get blogging coaching, too.
