Let’s talk about selling a content marketing strategy as an article writer. It’s vital to understand that no one wants content. They want the benefits of content. So when you approach your clients, sell them on the benefits of content first.

A strategy starts with a company, and its customers
As I said in this article on business blogging, I’ve been looking at business blogs across a range of industries. Many (most) business blogs were woeful. Someone had sold a company on the benefits of “SEO content” or “business blogging” and then produced rubbish content that no website visitor would willingly read.
Some business blogs were done well, as content marketing. If you looked closely, there was a definite strategy behind that content too. And if you’re the savvy writer that I know you are, you’ll sell your clients on a strategy, rather than on articles… We cover this in Article Fire Storm.
Why a strategy? Because your clients need it. The days when companies or anyone could shovel content onto the Web and make it work for them are long gone. Many companies haven’t realized that of course. They’re the companies which litter the outsourcing websites looking for $2 articles.
Steer clear of companies like this. They have no clue, and it’s not your job to educate them. There are endless companies which do have a clue, and they’re more than willing to pay for competent writers.
When you’re pitching a company on a content marketing strategy, look at the company and its customers. Check out the blogs I talked about in my business blogging article. Your content must appeal to a company’s customers, and it must help the company to achieve its marketing goals.
Sell your articles as…
You’ve pitched a company, and you’re selling them content: articles, in one form or another.
What can you turn those articles into? Anything you like, that works for the strategy you’ve developed. Including:
- Blog content
- Social media content (Twitter, Google+, Pinterest, Facebook, etc.)
- Email content (short courses, tips, newsletters, daily updates, etc.)
What you turn your articles into is up to you. Start with an article, then magic it into something else. What you create will depend on the company and the strategy you’ve developed with them.
Confidence is everything: you know more than you think you do
