How’s your freelance writing career been evolving in 2014? Over the next few weeks, we’ll look at what stood out in 2014, and plot ways forward to 2015. As a writer, you have wonderful opportunities. It’s up to you to grab them. 🙂
Let’s start with looking at blogging. In 2014, blogging is completely mainstream. Not only do companies blog, they’re realizing that their blog provides value to the company. Companies are becoming publishers.
I love Joe Pulizzi’s 25 Content Marketing Truths. Keep these truths in mind:
(18) Ninety percent of all corporate websites talk about how great the company or product is and forget about the customer’s informational needs.
(19) Ninety percent of all corporate websites are horrible.
There’s an opportunity there for you, and it’s a big one.
Back in January, we featured: Make Money Blogging in 2014: 20 HOT Tips. The first tip is the most important.
Create a mailing list.
You spend time and energy creating your blog, and attracting readers. Millions of blog posts are published each day, and our attention spans are getting shorter and shorter.
Here’s how to ensure that when someone visits your blog, he may just return: create a mailing list. Companies like aweber make creating a list simple and easy.
Create a list. 🙂

In May, we published: Blog Your Life: Build a Blogging Career. Take this to heart:
You may or may not be able to make money from your passions and lifestyle, you won’t know unless you try. Blog your life. You can blog about following your dreams, traveling the world, raising babies, or meeting any of life’s many challenges. Some bloggers even create popular blogs about getting out of debt. These kinds of blogs are popular because people can relate to them.
In July: Marketing for Writers: Get Hired Via Your Blog. Here’s the most valuable tip:
Choose companies you’d like to work with, and write about them. Then get in touch with them to let them know, and query them – offer to write something for them. When you personalize your marketing, not only do you get to work with the companies you choose, you’ll become a lot more confident too.
Blogging in 2015
Here’s the thing about blogging. It affects everything you do. If you write a book, your blog gives you a platform. If you want a writing job, your blog will help you to get it. I can’t think of anything you’d write, which won’t be helped if you have a blog.
I wish I had a dollar for every writer who’s said to me: “I got hired because they saw my blog.”
In 2015, blogging promises to become even hotter. We’ll look at ways in which you can blog to increase your writing income shortly.
