Have you discovered Pinterest yet? Pinterest is basically a visual bookmarking service, as well as a social media network. It’s appealing to marketers, because its conversion rate (visits converting to sales) is reputedly 50 per cent higher than conversion rates from other traffic. As far as this affects writers, here’s what you need to know: Pinterest makes sales.
I’ve already shared some Pinterest tips for writers, and I hope they inspired you. Several of my students have asked me about Pinterest in 2014 – should you have Pinterest on your radar? In a word, YES!
Here are some tips and ideas to help you to use Pinterest to build your platform.
1. Your Pinterest Boards Can Help You to Become a Thought Leader.
You want to promote yourself as a writer, and so you should. However, consider promoting yourself as a thought leader rather than as just a writer; it’s a wonderful way to build your platform.
I’m a big fan of Vic Sanborn’s Jane Austen’s World blog, and Vic has created some wonderful Pinterest boards to promote her blog. The blog, and Pinterest, have made her a thought leader in the Jane Austen industry – and yes, with books, movies, products and more all devoted to everything-Jane, it’s a huge industry.
If you’d like to promote your ebooks on Pinterest, consider becoming a thought leader like Vic.
2. Want to Get Hired? Create Some “Writing Business” Boards.
Wise writers specialize.
In copywriting, I specialize in tech and real estate. If I wanted to promote my copywriting services on Pinterest, I’d devote my energies on Pinterest to tech and real estate boards to promote those specialties. If you want to get hired to write in various areas, create some Pinterest boards for your specialties – become a thought leader. Companies and publications look for writers who are authorities on stories they want to cover. You can’t become an authority (a thought leader) in everything, but it increases your income if you’re an authority on something.
Don’t forget to create a website if you don’t have one. I’ve seen some marketing agencies (which should know better) using Pinterest as their website. Not a good idea, for many reasons. However, you can use Pinterest as your online portfolio. (Create a website too, I beg you…
You can create a board for each service you offer, and then pin your writing samples and credits to the board. As far as I can tell, few writers are doing this, so you’ll be in front of the crowd.
3. Promote Your Ebooks on Pinterest – Even Before You Write Them.
A no-brainer, for sure. I’ve been scouting Pinterest, and maybe I’m missing writers who promote effectively, but the writers I’ve found aren’t making the most of Pinterest. For them, it’s an afterthought.
Here are the basics to market your ebooks efficiently on Pinterest:
- Create a board for your topics if you’re writing nonfiction, and genre if you’re writing fiction;
- FILL IN YOUR PROFILE!!! (You know how much I hate exclamation marks, so when I use three of them, you know I’m serious, right?) I’ve seen so many writers on Pinterest trying to promote their ebooks, without even filling in their profile. Use keywords. People looking for information about you and your books need to be able to find you.
- Link to your website/ blog from your profile;
- Write fresh descriptions when pinning, and use hashtags too. Restrict yourself to one or two hashtags per description.
4. Get Social: Comment, Repin, and Add Widgets to Your Website.
Pinterest is a social media network, so get social. Repin others’ pins, comment on pins, and add a Pinterest widget to your website. Visit the Pinterest Goodies page to get Pinterest for your mobile devices, and grab the Pin It button for your Web browser.

If you have a WordPress blog, use a social media plugin. Most social media plugins include Pinterest, so your visitors can pin your content to their own Pinterest boards.
So there you have it. Pinterest has grown enormously in the past year. Few writers are using it as much as they could; even fewer are using Pinterest to build their platform. Pinterest is fun to use, takes little time, and makes sales. What’s not to like? Pin away.
