Want to write and publish Kindle ebooks? In self-publishing, formatting seems to terrify more writers than anything else. You need to convert your MS Word doc to various formats, so that you can sell on the Kindle book store, the Apple bookstore, and all the rest. Scary right?
Nothing could be further from the truth. If you don’t want to handle formatting and uploading your ebooks to the online book stores, others will do it for you. I enjoy tinkering with tech, but I know that many, if not most, writers would rather do their own dentistry. That’s OK. In the online world, others will cheerfully do what you hate to do. 😉
So ripped from my email Inbox, here’s info I’ve sent to writers on formatting options.
1. Fiverr.com saves you — cheap and efficient services
Go to fiverr.com and enter “ebook formatting” into the search query box. You’ll find providers there who are happy to format for you, for $5.
2. New — Draft2Digital — popular formats, and print, painlessly
Although I haven’t used them myself, I’ve been hearing great things about Draft2Digital. This service converts your MS Word or other document into all the major ebook formats. It will also manage your sales. (Please note that I have no connection with the company, they just seem to offer a good service.)
Although Draft2Digital takes a cut of your sales (read their pricing page carefully), the benefits outweigh the cost if you’re just starting out. Once you’re earning a full-time income from your self-publishing business, you can hire people to deal with managing your ebooks on the various sites, and keeping track of your sales.
I’ll be using the service myself shortly, just to try it out, and also because the service will save me lots of time with several projects I’m working on.
3. Other companies and individuals
Do a search for formatters on the Kindle Boards, and you’ll find companies and individuals who handle formatting for you.
So there you go. If you’re hesitant about writing and self-publishing, don’t be. Formatting need hold no terrors for you.
Write Whenever You Want, And Whatever You Want
My Easy-Write “cure” for writing stress and trauma crept up on me.
One day I wondered where the fear had gone… I was amazed. It was GONE; not a trace remained.
I could see how my life had changed as I worked with the Easy-Write process…
Writing had turned into a daily joy. Instead of cowering in bed when I awoke, I leaped out of bed, eager to get to the keyboard. I was happier in everything I did, and everyone around me was happier too.
Along with the joy, came the money. I had to turn clients away. Editors rang me to discuss new projects. Clients put me on retainer.
When I taught the Easy-Write process to my writing students, they achieved great results too — become a confident writer with the Easy Write Process.
