Want to write a book and make money? Here’s a tip: write SHORT ebooks. You can write several “shorties” in the time that it would take you to write one normal-length book.
There are several reasons you should consider writing short ebooks:
- Attention Span: No One Wants to Wade Through 100 Pages for One Nugget of Information
Read Amazon reviews. When readers are disappointed at the amount of waffle in a book, they’ll let you know: “Reads like an extended article… repeats material… learned nothing new… disappointed” etc.
- Readers Want Information on Which They Can Take Action NOW
Most people don’t have a lot of time to read. They may be reading on the train, while waiting for dinner to cook, or waiting to pick up their children.
You’re doing readers a favor when you focus your ebooks. Just give them information they can use right away.
- Each Ebook You Write and Sell Promotes the Other
Not only do shorties help readers, they help you, too. Volume counts when you’re a writer. Nothing sells your books like another book.
Plan to Write Shorties
If you’re working on a book, consider how you might split it into several shorties.
This is easy if you’re writing on “how to lose weight”, and similar nonfiction subjects.
But what if you’re writing fiction? It’s not easy to turn a complete novel into a series of shorties… or is it?
It’s easier than you think.
How to Turn Your Novel Into a Series
Amazon recently created a “Kindle Series” format. Serials were once a popular format for publishing, popularized by authors like Charles Dickens. They sell out of fashion in the 1980s, once the golden age of magazines was over.
Amazon is well aware that readers often stop reading. Publishing installments of novels makes it easier for readers to stay engaged.
However, you don’t need to use Amazon’s Series format. You can publish your own series; many writers have done so. Some with great success.
If you’re writing a novel and publishing it as a series, here are some tips:
Don’t leave too long between issues. Decide on weekly, or bi-weekly issues, and stick to your publication dates. I think a month is too long between issues; it may be idea for you – just make a decision, and stick to it;
Write at least the first draft of the complete novel, before you begin publishing;
Consider your cover images. Each issue needs to look as if it’s part of the series;
Set up a blog, or a Facebook page, to which readers can subscribe, and use to ask questions, and discuss the series.
Writing and selling ebooks is a wonderful way to not only make money, but also make your name as a writer. Start writing your first shortie today.
