Want to succeed at your writing? Me too…
Here’s a tip which will make achieving success much easier: please realize that you’ll only know when you’re on the path which leads to success… when you fail. Repeatedly.
Yes, this is a royal pain. It’s also the way it works. (By “it” I mean — writing, life, success, whatever.)
Here’s what failure tells you:
1. You had goals (this is much rarer than you’d think, few writers have goals);
2. You worked towards your goals (laudable, and again, rare);
3. You’re going the wrong way (feedback, which is precious);
4. Adjustments may be necessary.
I love this post, Practice and The Need to Fail, because the writer GETS IT — you need to write down what happened:
“Describe the experience you would like to improve – in writing.”
Read the entire post, and follow Jeff’s method. As he says: “Failure begins a new cycle of practice – provided you respond to your new conditions.”
Failure is always just feedback. While you’re alive, failure is never a permanent condition. Pay attention to what’s happening right now, and then get back on the horse.
To repeat: you’ll find that the path to success always leads THROUGH failure. Moreover, nine times out of ten, your eventual success would be impossible without that failure.
I’ve lived long enough to see this pattern repeat itself, again, and again, both in major and tiny events in my life, and in my writing.
An aside… This is why I usually tell you to SHUT UP about your writing.
If you tell all and sundry about your writing, you’re inviting failure. Nattering about what you’re doing takes energy, and if you’re in the early stages of a project, you’ll tend to obsess about what people say.
You’re much stronger and much more clever than you think. Welcome failure. It’s valuable feedback… you’re on the path.
