iBooks Author: Glad That Got Cleared Up

I’m an unapologetic Apple fan-girl. My very first computer was an Apple IIe, way back in the 1980s. Then, after years of fighting with Windows hardware, I finally came back to Apple in 2005. I credit Apple with making my writing life easier…

Then, iBooks Author was released, and I was ready to download it, until I became outraged at the EULA (End User License Agreement.)

I’ve been a very unhappy camper ever since. I HATE it when my heroes seem to have clay feet.

But, all is forgiven. My happiness is, once again, an Apple product.

Apple’s posted an update to iBooks Author. This article, iBooks Author 1.0.1 EULA: you own the content, we want 30% of .ibooks files | ZDNet, reveals the changes that Apple’s made to the contentious EULA, and reports:

“Apple’s pretty clear here. You can use iBooks Author to create commercial content and you will retain all rights to it. However, you cannot sell an .ibooks file created with iBooks Author with anyone other than Apple.”

Long story short. Your content is yours. If you use iBooks Author to create an ebook from it however, you can only sell that version through Apple.

I’m glad that got cleared up. I feel much better now.
