Writing articles is fun, and it can be hugely profitable too — you can turn it into a business. However, to do that effectively, without suffering burn out, you need to exercise your creativity.
Let’s look at five ways you can do that.
1. Start with your audience: what do they care about?
You’re writing FOR someone. Your audience has needs. I like to start my article writing projects with a capsule description of my audience.
Imagine a typical reader. What are his stresses? What gives him pleasure? What would make his life easier?
Use Quantcast to get demographics on your audience. Don’t omit this first step, it’s a real creativity booster.
2. The timer trick: get more done
BIG TIP: Separate brainstorming, drafting and writing. Writing is a process. You’ll get more done if you separate right brain and left brain activities. It’s more fun, too.
I like to brainstorm and kick around ideas, then write article titles. I do the writing on another day, and editing on yet another day.
Try this process — you’re writing articles in batches.
I use a timer, because the timer prevents dithering. I’m a Gemini, so I’m easily distracted. If I allowed myself to get distracted, I’d spend half an hour coming up with two article titles — not good.
If you’re a new writer, using a timer may be stressful. Try it, to see whether you respond well. If you feel stressed, turn off the timer. You can try timing your activities when you’ve built up your writing muscles.
3. Get inspired, and let it flow
What inspires you? I’m inspired by PG Wodehouse, and Anthony Trollope. I never tire of reading them, and I like to start my writing day by reading a few pages about Lord Emsworth, or one of the Pallisers.
Music inspires some writers. I know one writer who knits…
Figure out what inspires you, and then spend five to ten minutes with your inspirational activity before you start writing.
4. The free writing secret: from quantity comes quality
You can think about writing, or you can write — your choice.
Writing inspires more writing, so try free writing. I find that a free writing session (five to ten minutes) clears my mind, and helps me to focus.
Tip: you shouldn’t aim to get usable words from your free writing session; it just helps to prime the pump, so to speak.
5. Remember your call to action to get results
Every article you write has a point — a goal.
Know your goal — the response you want from a reader — before you start writing.
So, there you have it. Five ways to make writing articles easier by exercising your creativity.
