Writing For The Web: Get Paid to Keep It Fresh

A webpage, and a website, are like housework: they’re never, ever done.

As I said in this post, Freelance Writing Jobs: Understanding Web Writing | Angela Booth’s Fab Freelance Writing Blog:

Keep It Active: a Website Is Never Done

Unlike print, a webpage is never published forever. You can change a page often, and in many cases you should. The more often you can revisit pages to refresh them, the better. The web search engines love fresh content.”

It’s wise to remind your Web writing clients of that, because it means more work for you.

Indeed, when you accept a Web writing project, discuss the maintenance of the content with your client. An old, stale site won’t attract a constant stream of visitors, and sites need to be maintained and updated, to perform well.

Offer a content updating service

“Content updating” is a simple service you can perform for your clients — and advertise — yet few writers do it. I encourage my writing students to offer this service, and you should offer it too.

This service can be as simple, or as complex, as you like.

If you’re an experienced Web writer, you can do a complete content audit. On larger sites which have been online for several years, this will take a while. You don’t have to do it all immediately, of course. Create a program for yourself, and see to it over several months. Your client should start seeing results very quickly.

An avalanche of content pours onto the Web every day, and the search engines’ bias for fresh content will keep you busy. Let “fresh” be your new watchword, as you work with your Web writing clients.
